Educational Excellence

One key advantage in attending private schools is the opportunity for academic excellence. A good boarding school deepens the student's interests and commitment to learning. Private school students range from average to superior academic ability. Virtually all private boarding schools are preparatory for college. (Some private boarding schools also serve students prior to grades 9-12.) There are also Specialty Boarding Schools specifically designed to help teens that are struggling in their home, school, or community. These type of private schools offer fine emotional growth educational and character building  components to go alongside a traditional boarding school educational environment.
In the typical boarding school, many of the faculty members have advanced degrees. But at these secondary school teachers are not to be confused with college professors. A private school teacher must understand the different needs, attitudes and interests of adolescents.

Some private schools have programs for students with special needs, such as:

  •  Remedial reading or writing
  •  Remedial Math
  •  Programs for deaf students
  •  Programs for blind students
  •  Behavior Modification
  •  Computer Learning
  •  Emotional Growth
  •  Character Building
  •  Counseling
  •  Self Directed Program

In terms of mission, culture and style, each private school is independent.  Student bodies range from a few dozen to several thousand.  Some boarding schools have more than a thousand students enrolled in grades 9 through 12, but the median size of boarding schools is considerably smaller -- 265 students.  The physical size of a boarding school campus is up to 200 acres.

Just as important as the school's academic quality is the social education it offers. Through the boarding experience, students learn responsible behavior, citizenship, social responsibility and interaction.  As well as the ability to positively interact with peers and increased ability to study and increase their learning abilities.

Teachers are often found on campus, and may serve as dorm parents and chaperones for social activities. With teachers' greater interest and availability, students have significantly greater opportunities to obtain mentoring. While countless public school faculties have many equally devoted individuals, there can be no denying that the proximity of teacher and student in the private school environment offers an additional advantage.
