If your child is going to be attending a boarding school for the first time, they are going to have an interview. This interview acts as a means for the admissions committee to determine if the child is a good fit for their learning environment. While questions will vary school to school, learning the basics and really practicing can ease your child’s nerves and also improve their chances of getting in. Read on to learn common questions you might want to practice with your child.

1. Tell me about your family.
Since learning starts in the home, it might be possible that your child gets asked this question. Parents often cringe on this question because there are so many responses that can leave them embarrassed or even lessen the child’s chances of attending. Try and talk with your child about keeping it simple. For instance, talk about members of your family, and special times that you might have together.

2. Why are you interested in coming to this school?
Of course, the admissions department knows why the parents want their children to attend school, but hearing a response from a student goes a long way. This question will help admissions to first understand if the child is really interested, and it will also show if the child has done their research on learning about the school. Parents should help children do research about the school, pointing out interesting facts that relate to their child’s interests.

3. What do you like to do in your spare time?
The world today is filled with technology, and while that is great is some instances, schools want to know that your child does more than just play video games or surf the Internet. Parents should try to encourage their children long before this interview to discuss topics that are beneficial. For instance, if they complete community service, love to read, tutor students after school, or participate in extracurricular sports in the community, all are great choices to discuss.

4. Outside of school requirements, what books do you read?
Reading is fundamental, and admissions officials want to see how well your child understands that. Reading outside of school shows independence, willingness to learn, and diligence. Get your children actively reading on a day-to-day basis. It does not have to be boring novels of any kind, but find something interesting to your child and allow them to engage in books. If they do not read often, try focusing on the types of books they like to read instead.

5. If accepted, what can you bring to our school?
Sound somewhat familiar? This is the question that parents dread on job interviews, “What can you bring to our company if hired?” This is where being a good salesman comes into play. Write down a list of your child’s best qualities and have them brainstorm on what these qualities could offer to the school.
