Oxford Academy

"It is our belief that the most important part of your life is ahead of you, not behind, and we are more interested in where you want to go than where you have been."

These are the words of Philip H. Davis, Headmaster of Oxford Academy. Located in Westbrook, Connecticut, Oxford is not only a high school, but also a special opportunity for young men. For over 100 years, Oxford helped develop the skills, both academic and social, to prepare them for their future attainment as integral persons of the global community.

It was the dream of Dr. Joseph M. Weidberg to aid the waning performance of students through the flaws of traditional education systems. Dr. Weidberg reverted to the distinguished educators of the past for inspiration in developing a school to attain his dream. His model was Socrates who was devoted in the education and welfare of the citizens. Socrates’ method was to reveal core beliefs and the degree of one’s knowledge by asking a series of questions. Thus, in 1906, Oxford Academy was founded on the workings of this influential philosopher.

Socrates’ methods of philosophical inquiry lead to the formation of the Oxford Method, a unique curriculum utilizing one-on-one tutoring for each student to advance at their own pace, allowing even those with academic weaknesses to achieve academic and social success. The Oxford Method is based on six core beliefs on teaching and learning: strategy and logic, challenge, opportunity, personal efficiency, self-advocacy, and control.

The Oxford Academy is fully equipped with top-of-the-line facilities for their comprehensive academic, artistic and athletic development. Students can also enjoy their time in the recreational center which contains a pool table, foosball table, air-hockey table, ping-pong table and two flat-screen television sets set up especially for gaming.

The Oxford Academy also offers assistance in college placement. The Director of College Guidance cooperates with seniors, their parents and educational consultants to choose and enroll in appropriate colleges.

The Oxford Academy is one the finest private boarding school dedicated to the thorough development of students with exclusive non-traditional, highly-personalized high school education.
