Suffield Academy

Suffield Academy is a coeducational independent secondary school located in Suffield, Connecticut, USA. The school serves boarding and day students across the country and internationally. Suffield Academy

is established in academic excellence, strong work ethics, respect and commitment to education.

Suffield Academy was initially established as the Connecticut Literary Institute in 1833, later renamed Suffield School in 1916 and then Suffield Academy in 1937. Its primary mission was to educate young men for the Baptist ministry. Eventually, the founders deviated from its primary focus and opened its doors to diversity, with women joining the community.

Guided by its motto “Esse Quam Videri”, “to be, rather than to seem”, Suffield Academy is dedicated to nurturing the mind, body, spirit and soul of its students.

To nurture the mind, Suffield students are challenged to achieve success, encouraged to lead, and exercise the theatre of the mind. Suffield Academy is the first in America to require its students to own laptops. To nurture the body, students are engaged in various athletics programs to foster personal competence, self-confidence, commitment and hard work. To nurture the spirit, the Suffield environment harbors a tight-knit friendly, familial community to grow in. To nurture the soul, students are encouraged to express themselves and bring out their creativity in their performance.

The Suffield Academy mission is to instill a sense of responsibility and challenge them to grow in a structured and nurturing school community. The Suffield students are expected to emerge from their Suffield experience prepared for the path to success.

As in the words of the current Headmaster, Charles Cahn III, “There is an emphasis here on helping students succeed, and focusing on the distance they travel during their years on the Suffield campus. Our mission also speaks to the nature of our community—what it feels like to be at Suffield. This is a school that combines challenging academics and high standards with an encouraging, supportive faculty. This clarity about who we are gives Suffield an important position in the independent school world.”
