The Cheshire

Academy

The Cheshire Academy is a coeducational college preparatory school located in Cheshire, Connecticut, USA. Cheshire Academy has over two centuries of history, being the oldest operating private school in Connecticut and the tenth oldest boarding school in America.

In the 18th century, the Episcopal religion was striving to be established in the colonies. A delegation sent Samuel Seabury to England, believing that the religion could be better accepted if there was an American bishop. He came back as the first Episcopal Bishop of America, and as one of his first duties, he started a school to educate future clergy. Cheshire, a town with a distinctive balance of suburban and rural environment, was chosen as the site of the then Episcopal Academy of Connecticut.

In 1794, Cheshire Academy opened its doors to the youth. Through the years, Cheshire Academy evolved to become the abode of educational excellence, student-centered ethos and a globally diverse environment. The Cheshire Academy is guided by their core values, the Eight Pillars of Bowden: Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Civility, Citizenship, Morality, Fairness, and Trustworthiness.

Respect is the epitome of an educated individual. Having great respect for oneself begets respect for fellow individuals. Responsibility works hand-in-hand with respect. It is the “ability to respond” to the needs of others. Students comprise value for a person by respecting them, and are sensitive to their needs by valuing them.

“Treat others as you would like to be treated.” This is the Golden Rule that Cheshire Academy students abide by. Consideration, compassion, benevolence and sharing with others show that they care. We are civilized human beings, and the students act accordingly so. The students behave courteously and observe proper decorum, fit for a gentleman and a lady of the Cheshire Academy.

The students respect and obey authority and contribute to the wellbeing of the community they live in. The Cheshire student is guided by ethics and integrity for a harmonious relationship with the people around them. People are all equal. Students keep an open mind and treat every individual, situation and themselves fairly. The students of Cheshire Academy are trained to be trustworthy, committed and self-disciplined. In Cheshire Academy, students are placed at the center of integrated education where teachers love to teach and students love to learn.
